Prompt #2: Running an Analogy

How is teaching like farming/gardening?  

Try to name at least three things that would fit this analogy.

  1. It takes a LOT of water to sustain a farm, and it takes a LOT of teaching and effort to sustain learning. As students grow and develop, we must shape and reshape their understanding, much like pruning a plant. And because I'm all out of fresh ideas I'll use the good ole' fashioned "We're planting the seeds of knowledge!" colloquialism. I hope I spelled that right...

    It's like relying on the elements to provide you the chance to grow something valuable, something that feeds you. The elements are the uncontrollables/variables such as family life, SES, genetic makeup of students; the something (seed) is the student, arriving in your hands and ready to grow and develop -- question is: Will I take good enough care here to actually PRODUCE something? -- ; the value (sale of crop) / feeding (food on table) is indeed a lifelong learner, equipped w/problem-solving skills and well-adjusted, ready to be a positive contribution to society. Another big query: will it rain?

The students are seeds and teachers are the gardeners and the teachers instructions/lessons are the water and fertilizer, The ripe vegitation is all different just like the students at the end of acedemic training are all unique and different, again the diferentation of the type of plant is also similar to the uniqueness of the students and the care instructions of food, water and light exposure is equal to the different learning and needs of each student

  4. Farmers have to make sure that their tools our sharp and strong to ensure their productivity (A teacher's knowledge and teaching methods need to be sharp and strong to help students learn). A farmer needs to make sure the environment is suitable for a strong and plentiful crop (A teacher needs to make sure that their learning environment is suitable to get the most out of a student's ability to learn). Farming can be very surprising sometimes but a good farmer will do whatever it takes to have a good harvest (Teaching sometimes has bumps in the road but we have to find a way to make learning happen whatever the problem).

  5. Teaching is like gardening in the sense of you have to first plant what you want in your garden/instill values and set rules of how you want your classroom ran.

    You have to continual water a garden to help it grow/ you have to continual teach to help them grow in their knowledge.

    You have to pick and sell the different things you grow/ as a teach you have to let the children grow and move on to the next grade level.

  6. lol...I belive they are a lot alike in many ways...we are always gardening our children to grow and become better people and students in both academics and life in general...and there is always a new crop coming in every year however there may be a few "weeds" thats werent ready or missed something that get retained...all of the students we teach should be able to show something they leaned as a plant or animal are able to produce something and by this we are able to tell how well they were "watered"

  8. I like to think of a school room as a farm, with the students being the plants. We would have to water the plants ( give knowledge) to see the plants grow. In this case the plants would be the students. Also the harvesting would be the end result of the teaching of the students (plants). In this analogy if the plants are not fed then they will die. So if the students are not fed information then their mind might wilt.In this case the teacher is like the farmer and the students are like plants. Also we should sing to our students as well as our plants so they will grow strong and healthy. It's an everyday task to develop students as well as to make a good crop and this extends over a long period of time ( growing cycle.) Joel
